In Plain Sight

Two tawny frogmouths

settle southward and nap

in naked nests:

mustard and mellow leaves

swoop around their stillness.

In-between unloading ute trays

I gaze

up to daytime browns, greys;

their hidden eyes disguise

their eagerness for looting.

The haunted mice

later that night

sleep under the oom-oom

of their monotone

midnight mass.

They would never have guessed

their southern guests

would mangle them in the morning.
